This essay deals with the concept of enmity and its representation in Athenian drama and modern rhetoric. It analyses the dynamics of friendship and enmity and its prominent opposition, as well as the limits of the moral standard of helping one’s friends and harming one’s enemies. This dichotomous pattern proved problematic not only in Ancient Athens, but also in today‘s politics.
