Zur Gefäßpflanzenflora von Burgruinen in Niederösterreich

Hübl, Erich; Scharfetter, Ernst

The vascular flora of 55 ruins mostly of medieval castles of Lower Austria is summarized in three tables of parts of the country, the highland in the North-West, the Northern and the Central Alps, and the hills in the East, with strongest influence of the pannonic climate. The most ruins are situated in forests far from settlements. Therefore the majority of plants is more or less tolerant against shadow. Hemerophytes like Syringa vulgaris and Cymbalaria muralis are rare. According to the geographical position of Lower Austria east-praealpine species like Cyclamen purpurascens and Knautia drymeia, and species with the main occurrence in the pannonian area like Euonymus verrucosa, Seseli osseum, Allium flavum are characteristic. Like the other ruins in Central Europe species with high requirement on nutrients or on lime are most frequent. Acidity indicating plants like Avenella flexuosa and Vaccinium myrtillus are rare, even on ruins built on silicate rocks.
